I love working with Half Square Triangles (or HSTs) – they are one of the most versatile basic quilting block units and can be created and combined in countless ways. You may have noticed – that many of the patterns I create for Quiltblox – include HSTs – there’s a reason for that – they are so easy to make!
I’m sure you’ve made a HST or two in your time as a quilter – but did you know there’s an easy way to make them up in larger quantity – all at the same time? Now – this method will make multiples of HSTs that are all the same – not what you want of you are going for a very scrappy look. But – if like me – you like a controlled scrappy look – having 4 or 8 of the same HST – is perfect!
Over and Under is a great example of that controlled scrappy look. Each block uses 2 sets of 6 HSTs as well as the white background fabric. I used the 8 at a time method and tossed the extra HSTs in my stash for a future project. I really love how this one turned out!
Half Square Triangles are easy to make up in multiples – if you know the math. No problem, I’ve done the math for you in these downloadable Quiltblox LEARN Tutorials. Click on any or all of them to open – and print out the instructions.
