HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES

OVER AND UNDER - QUILT
Over and Under by Quiltblox / Deb Messina

Half Square Triangles (or HSTs) are one of the most versatile quilt blocks we can make. They can be arranged in an endless number of combinations to create some stunning designs.

The quilt pictured above (OVER AND UNDER) is just one example. I designed this fun, happy quilt to show how a controlled scrappy look using HSTs can create a lovely design. I think the effect is pretty pleasing – don’t you?

In this section of Quiltblox – LEARN, I’ll be sharing all kinds of ways to make and use Half Square Triangles.

The quilt at right – (Windmill) – is another quilt I designed – entirely from Half Square Triangles.

See how different it is from the quilt above – and yet, they are both made using HSTs.

Windmill - a quilt designed by Deb Messina - Quiltblox

When I started making HSTs – I did what most everyone did at the time. I cut triangles and stitched them together. What a pain that was! All those edges – cut on the bias made it really difficult to get accurate (and flat) Half Square Triangles. It’s no wonder so many quilters avoid making them.

There are much better (and more accurate) ways to make Half Square Triangles. I’ve included three different methods in the Quiltblox Tutorials below. Just click on the images to open and download – or print each tutorial.
