And here it is – The Reveal! All month long we’ve been working on a remix of the traditional Bear Paw block.
As many of you know – I’ve been participating in a monthly Block Remix Challenge with a group of other Pattern Designers. I’m doing this to help stimulate my creative thinking and help to give me some ideas for new patterns.
For the month of June – we worked with the traditional Bear Paw Block. It’s a pretty straightforward block made up of squares, rectangles, and Half Square Triangles. I’ve made this block many times in the past – maybe you have as well. I thought it would be a fun challenge to see what I could do with this block so that it retained some of its original look – but became something new.
Here’s what the traditional block would look like:
As you can see – I’ve made a few changes – starting with replacing the small square center block with a giant circle. That circle will get a bit of plumping up – with some trapunto before I quilt this block.
From there – I layered slivers of fabric over the pads of the Bear Paw and added a stalk and some leaves. The Bear paw – has become a fun sunflower. I haven’t quilted it yet – I’m thinking about doing some thread painting on this one. Need to sleep on it before I decide.
The other participating pattern designers are revealing their remixed blocks on Instagram – be sure to check out what they’ve come up with. I’ve seen them and there are some really creative designers out there! You’ll find links to all of them in my post on Instagram: Deb.Quiltblox – June Block Remix
