She’s done it again! Author Kathyrn Mykel has released Pieced with Purpose – a Quilting Guide. Unlike her works of quilting cozy fiction – this non-fiction book is a compilation of the most often occurring issues we deal with in creating our quilts, how they happen, and how to prevent them.
As a longtime professional quilter and pattern designer, Kathryn has experienced all the things that can go wrong – and learned how to prevent them. And … she’s used her skills as an author to pull them all together into this new guide.
Most quilting problems have simple solutions. And sometimes … you don’t know them until you know them. – Kathryn Mykel
Each quilting process issue from auditioning fabrics, dealing with wonky blocks, and seam nesting to binding is addressed with quilty humor, a statement of the problem, typical causes and remedies.
All 17 Tips are fully explained and presented as:
- Quilters Dilemma: here’s the problem
- Remedy: This is what needs to change in order to prevent the problem
- Why it Works: The logic behind the remedy
- Quick Action: Step by step – doing the task without recreating the problem
- Alternative Tip: An additional pro tip to make this process even better
- Quilter’s Wisdom: Guidance from a quilty friend
I also loved the section on quilting as self-care. Making time to quilt (and protecting that time) – even if it’s just 20 – 30 minutes, matters. Quilting calms the mind and engages our creativity in ways that are helpful in the rest of our lives. It’s a great reminder that our quilting passion – is good for us.
Pieced with Purpose would be helpful for anyone new to quilting or someone who struggles with any aspect of the quilting process. I would have loved having this information when I was teaching myself to quilt (many, many moons ago).
Pieced with Purpose – Includes a Bonus
Kathryn has included the first three chapters of “Sewing Suspicion” at the back of the book. She’s also included sneak peeks into two other series – Heatherton and Patchwork Pines (Links below).
About the Author:
New England native, avid quilter, pattern designer, and award winning author, Kathryn Mykel has won Best Indie Cozy Mystery Book of the year – twice (2021 and 2022). A prolific writer, she has published over 50 books including:

Quilting Cozy Mysteries (Humor, quirky amateur sleuths, small town mysteries, and quilting).
Holiday Pet Sleuth Mysteries (Humor, mysteries and furry friends)
Heatherton Quilting Cozy Mysteries (Quilting Retreat Center on the coast of Maine – complete with mysteries to be solved.)
There are other series and several stand-alone titles as well. I’ve been a fan of her quilting cozy mysteries from the first book and always look forward to announcements about new books in the series. Who doesn’t love a series featuring a group of women who are more “experienced” in life and share a love of quilting, community, friendship and an interesting mystery to solve? I certainly do, and I’m guessing you will too.
