My goal is to be able to comfortably sew and quilt until I draw my last breath. Lately, I’m finding that I need to modify how I do certain things. Sometimes that means finding different tools, increasing the lighting, or taking breaks to stretch out my hands. A conversation with some quilty friends got me thinking about compiling a list of the things we’ve tried that have worked for our tired or arthritic hands.

Here’s where you come in. I’m looking for what’s worked for you (tools, workarounds, etc.). My goal is to compile a list of ideas and to share them. I have found some things are working for me – and I’ll include those things on the list too.
Whether it’s a specialized thimble that fits just right, an ergonomic rotary cutter that minimizes strain, or a simple yet ingenious hack for threading needles, I want to hear about it! Your experiences and recommendations could be helpful to other quilters facing similar challenges.
Some questions to get you thinking:
- Favorite Tools: What quilting or sewing tools have you found to be the most comfortable and effective for easing hand fatigue or arthritis pain?
- Adapted Techniques: Have you developed any unique techniques or modifications to traditional quilting methods that alleviate strain on your hands?
- DIY Solutions: Have you crafted any homemade tools or aids that have improved your quilting experience?
- Product Recommendations: Are there any specific products or brands that you swear by for their ergonomic design and comfort features?
- General Tips: Do you have any general tips or advice for quilters struggling with hand discomfort or arthritis?
Sharing your ideas with me is easy – complete the form below, share your ideas, and then submit them. I’ll get the message and will add your ideas to the list.
Just so you know – I’m not looking to receive, or share medical advice. I’m not a doctor, and I don’t play one on TV. I just thought it would be fun to tap into this amazing collective group of people and share what’s worked for us with each other.
