Those rolls of 2-1/2 inch pre-cut strips found in every quilt shop – are so addictive. Anywhere from 20 – 42 strips all cut from the same line of fabric, they are hard to resist. I’d like to propose an alternative – cutting those strips from a selection of fabrics you curate yourself.
I love the look of a more restrained or controlled scrappy look to my scrappy quilts. Choosing a selection of fabrics and cutting my own strips from them plays perfectly into that look. I can then use my strips to make up any of the fun pre-cut strip patterns available – like those found in Jelly Roll Jam – Quilts Made with 2-1/2 Inch Strips.
So … if I’m going to cut my own strips, how much fabric should I buy (or pull from my stash) to cut the number of strips I’ll need for my “controlled scrappy” project? I’ve created a chart for that.
The math has already been done – I’ve created the chart below for cutting 2-1/2 inch strips for various yardage increments. This chart is the latest addition to my Quilt Math series of charts and guides – helping you with some of that troublesome math.
Just click on the image or the button below it to open the file and print out a copy.
The chart above is one example of the charts and guides I’m adding to the – QUILT MATH section of this website, under the LEARN tab at the top of any page on the website.
I have a few more to add, but several useful charts are included in QUILT MATH right now. You can print them out and have them handy for when you need to refer to them. I hope you find them to be as helpful as I do!
