Patriotic quilts are some of my favorite projects to make. With the fourth of July coming right up – I thought it would be fun to share a couple of projects that can be made up quickly – even in time to celebrate this year.
Old Glory is a 12″ x 40″ banner or wall hanging (or bench pillow).
Block by Block is a quick-to-piece 66″ x 78″ quilt – perfect for picnics and watching the fireworks. I’ve also made this one up for a Quilts of Valor recipient.
Why are patriotic quilts so special to me?
Someone (sometimes many someones) from every generation of my extended family has served in the United States military. Every branch of service has been represented. A couple gave their all, some like my brother, served for decades – others served their tour of duty and went on to other pursuits. My cousin’s oldest son – is our newest military family member having joined the US Coast Guard a few weeks ago.
How do I honor their service?
I make patriotic quilts. Several years ago – I spent a year making a Quilt of Valor for every living family member I had contact with. 11 Quilts of Valor were awarded at our annual family party (9 for family and 2 for friends) with the help of our local chapter of Quilts of Valor (Thank you, Faith!). It was a day to remember. Now – I have a few more to make. I also love to design patterns featuring patriotic designs, like the two featured here – so you can make patriotic quilts too.
