All my quilting life, I have made block-based quilts. It’s what I do, and what the name of my business is based on. I mean – Quiltblox – that’s pretty clear, I think.
Like so many of you, I have made my share of quilts featuring flying geese, log cabins, friendship stars, signature blocks, and a whole host of other traditional blocks. I love them. I’m not going to stop making them in new ways and unexpected combinations. They are fun to make, and I love designing new Quiltblox patterns using them.
That being said, there’s a part of me that is drawn to art quilts and the techniques used in creating them.
There’s something truly magical about the world of art quilts. Maybe, like me, you started out piecing traditional blocks and following patterns, only to find yourself itching to break the rules and let your imagination run wild! Art quilts are the perfect playground for creativity—they’re where fabric, thread, and vision come together in a vibrant celebration of self-expression.
What Is an Art Quilt?
Simply put, an art quilt is a quilt that’s created primarily as an expression of artistic vision rather than for functional bedding. It’s where quilting meets the world of art—think fabric instead of canvas, thread instead of paint (although painting on fabric is a fun technique). Art quilts often break free from traditional patterns and might be hung on a wall like a painting. They can tell a story, convey a message, evoke emotion, or just delight the eye with color and texture.
Art quilts can be photo-realistic, completely abstract, or something else entirely. It all begins with an idea and then choosing the techniques that can bring that idea to life.
Techniques That Make Art Quilts Exciting
One of the things that draws me to art quilts is the endless variety of techniques we can use. Unlike traditional quilting, where you might stick to piecing, art quilting opens up a whole toolbox of creative options. Here are just a few of the many ways to make your art quilt your own:
- Appliqué: Layer shapes of fabric onto a background and stitch them down. You can create landscapes, portraits, or abstract designs—appliqué is perfect for adding bold imagery.
- Paint and Dye: Yes, you can actually paint or dye your quilt fabrics! Fabric paints, inks, or even tie-dye techniques let you add vibrant color and unique effects. I love splattering a bit of paint to give my quilts an energetic feel.
- Thread Sketching (or Thread Painting): Using your sewing machine like a drawing tool, you can “sketch” designs with thread. Free-motion quilting lets you draw lines, shapes, and textures directly onto your quilt.
- Collage and Mixed Media: Why stop at fabric? Add beads, buttons, ribbons, and even found objects. Layering unexpected materials gives your quilt a one-of-a-kind look.
- Surface Embellishments: Hand embroidery, metallic threads, sequins—anything goes when it comes to dressing up your quilt top!
- Raw Edge Techniques: Sometimes, frayed or exposed edges add texture and drama. Consider leaving edges unfinished for an intentionally wild vibe. I’ve been experimenting with “scribble quilting” with black thread
- over the raw edges of an image – it’s a fun effect.
- Photo Transfers: Print a favorite photo onto fabric and incorporate it into your art quilt for a personal touch.
A Resource That Inspires Me!
I find it helpful to have resources that I can return to again and again as I’m learning something new. One of my personal favorites is Quilting Arts Magazine. It’s a quarterly publication celebrating all things related to art quilting.
You see all those sticky notes sticking out of the pages of this latest issue? Those little bookmarks are reminding me that there’s an article I want to spend a little more time with.
This current issue (Fall 2025) focuses on color and the many ways we can use color to express our creativity. And here’s the thing – understanding color – isn’t just for art quilts. It applies to every quilt we make. I find it hugely helpful to learn more about something that I work with every day. Here’s a look at the Table of Contents for this issue:
Where Am I on My Art Quilt Journey?
For me, making art quilts is the ultimate form of creative freedom (which I have to say, can feel a little intimidating). Whether I’m experimenting with new techniques or telling a story through fabric, every art quilt is a chance to play, discover, and share a piece of myself. Every single idea I tackle makes me feel like a beginner all over again. It’s a learning journey that I will be on as long as I’m able to sew a stitch.
If you’re feeling curious, grab some scraps and let your imagination take the lead. Your stash and sewing machine are waiting! Who knows what masterpiece you’ll create next?
