Row x Row 2025 – The Great Outdoors

I have some very exciting news to share! I have been asked by Janet Lutz, owner of Calico Gals in Syracuse, New York, and the creator of Row x Row, to create a quilt setting instruction for this year’s Row x Row Experience. Of course, I was delighted to say YES!

When my shop was open in Beaverton, I couldn’t wait for this event every year. It’s always a new creative challenge to come up with a great design based on the theme each year. It also gave me the opportunity to meet many of you for the first time – love that!

This year, the Row X Row theme is The Great Outdoors, and the fabrics selected to bring this theme to life are gorgeous! Northcott has created a grouping of fabrics in four different colorways and geographic representations – Desert, Meadow, Mountain, and Ocean. No matter where you live in this beautiful country, you can create a quilt that represents your favorite landscape. You can see them HERE.

I’ll show you how I used these gorgeous fabrics in a minute, but first, you need to know that this year:

  • [1] The event runs from July 1 to August 31.
  • [2] The entire event is ONLINE, as well as in participating stores. You (and I) can participate from the comfort of our own (sofa, dining room table, sewing space, etc.). We can also choose to visit any shop in person if we happen to be in their area.
  • [3] The rows are 9″ x 18″ (9-1/2″ x 18-1/2″), and they can be designed either horizontally or vertically.
  • [4] The Quilt Setting Pattern I have designed is completely FREE to you.

And now for the fun part …

I’ve created a design that is pretty easy to construct, whether the rows you collect are vertical or horizontal.

I’ve used each of the four colorways of the Official Shop Hop Fabrics to create a border that makes the sashing and your rows appear to “float”. I think it’s a pretty cool effect – I hope you do too! Here’s a look:
