Holiday Gifts You Can Start Sewing Now!

By Deb Messina on October 30, 2025October 30, 2025

Get a jump on your handmade holiday giving – one stitch at a time.

The air’s getting crisper, pumpkin spice is showing up everywhere, and before you know it, we’ll be turning the calendar to December. If you’re planning to give handmade holiday gifts this year, now’s the perfect time to start sewing!

Making gifts by hand is one of the most meaningful ways to show someone you care. And if you’re like me (and most quilters), you probably already have a treasure trove of beautiful fabrics waiting to be transformed into something wonderful. Whether you’re sewing for family, friends, neighbors, or yourself — this is your friendly reminder that it’s not too late to make something heartfelt (and fun!).

I’ve rounded up a list of ideas for holiday gifts — some quick and easy, others a bit more ambitious — all designed to help you make the most of your quilting fabric stash and your creative energy this holiday season.

🎁 Quick and Easy Gifts (Perfect for a Weekend Project)

Fabric Coasters & Mug Rugs
Great for using scraps or charm squares! Stitch up a set in coordinating fabrics, tie them together with a ribbon, and pair with a pretty mug or packet of cocoa mix for a thoughtful, simple gift.

Fabric Gift Bags
Reusable and eco-friendly — plus, your fabric wrapping becomes part of the gift! Make a few in different sizes to fit everything from jewelry to books. They’re a wonderful way to reduce waste and showcase your favorite prints.

Quilted Ornaments
Think folded star ornaments, mini log cabin blocks, or simple stuffed shapes. Add a bit of ribbon or a jingle bell for an extra festive touch.

  • This is a fun project to work on with the kids. Some pretty fabrics, ribbon, glue, and glitter can make some cute ornaments – and wonderful memories.

Hot Pads & Oven Mitts
Pair them with a favorite cookie recipe or a kitchen towel for a quick and thoughtful hostess or neighbor gift. They come together quickly, and they’re both practical and pretty.

  • Tip: I use old towels as the padding for hot pads and oven mitts. It works well, and the final product is machine washable.

Bookmark Sets
Perfect for the book lovers in your life — and a great way to use leftover strips or selvages. You can even personalize them with embroidered initials or fabric paint.

🎄 Gifts That Feel a Little More Special (But Still Doable!)

Table Runners or Table Toppers
Choose festive prints or timeless neutrals. A simple pieced runner can come together in an afternoon and add instant holiday cheer to any table.

Throw Pillows
Mini quilt blocks or orphan blocks make great pillow fronts. Change out the cover with the season — or make one that works all year long.

Tote Bags & Project Bags
Crafters and quilters can never have too many! Add clear vinyl fronts or fun pockets for extra flair. These are perfect for toting groceries, books, or works in progress.

I love making these for quilty friends. The Sewing Saddle Bag is super quick to make, and it keeps all the pins, needles, clips, and snips in one place on the arm of your chair or sofa.

Zippered Pouches or Cosmetic Bags
Handy for travel, sewing notions, or art supplies. They’re also great stocking stuffers or teacher gifts.

Quilted Wall Hangings
Mini quilts are perfect for brightening up an entryway, kitchen, or sewing room. Try a holiday motif like stars, trees, or ornaments — or go for something that works year-round.

I loved making these two wall quilts:

❄️ For the Loved Ones Who Deserve Something Cozy

Lap Quilts or Throw Quilts
Start now, and you’ll have time to finish something beautiful and heartfelt. Choose a pattern that comes together quickly — think charm packs, jelly rolls, or strip quilts.

  • If you are planning on having your project quilted by a long-armer, call them right away to see what their availability is if you want to gift it at Christmas.

Quilted Shawl or Wrap
A cozy wrap made with soft flannel or minky makes a thoughtful and luxurious gift. Perfect for reading by the fire or morning coffee on the porch.

Pillowcases
Simple to make, easy to personalize, and always appreciated. A set of handmade pillowcases in cheerful prints can brighten any bed or guest room.

🪡 Tips for Stress-Free Holiday Sewing

  • Make a list of who you’d like to sew for — then match people to projects that fit your time and energy.
  • Shop your stash first before buying new fabric (but treat yourself if something festive calls your name!).
  • Batch your sewing — cut all your projects one day, sew another, and finish up with a “binding and wrapping” weekend.
  • Start small — even one or two handmade gifts can make your holiday season extra special.

✂️ A Little Encouragement Before You Begin

There’s still time to make something wonderful before the holidays — especially if you start now. Whether you’re piecing coasters from your scrap bin or wrapping up a cozy throw for someone you love, every stitch you make adds a little more joy to the season.

So pour yourself a cup of something warm, pull out that holiday playlist, and let’s get sewing!
