A couple of weeks ago, Diane had a question about spray-basting adhesive. She wanted to know which ones she could use without gumming up the needle, and that would wash out of the finished quilt. I asked you for some advice, and several of you came to the rescue.
Truth be told, I’ve been avoiding spray basting adhesive myself because I have asthma and am super cautious about anything that puts a propellant of any kind into the air. When Diane messaged me with her question, I reached out to all my fabulous newsletter subscribers for their expertise. You had lots advice to share.
So the brands that were recommended to me, include:
You also had some tips for using these spray-basting products. They include:
[1] Spray very lightly – no need to soak the fabric with the adhesive.
[2] Use them outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area.
[3] Protect the area around your project from over spray.
[4] Let the quilt sandwich dry completely before quilting, it will feel cold when the spray is still wet.
[5] The basting spray will wash out when the quilt is laundered.
After getting so much advice, I decided to give it a try myself. I had a small project that needed quilting, and instead of hand-basting (which is what I usually do), I tried the 505 by Odif. I used all of the tips mentioned above and set up a station outside on a very large piece of cardboard.
I wore an N95 mask (you might not need the mask, but I highly recommend it). Then I carefully (and very lightly) sprayed between the layers of my project, smoothed everything into place, and let it sit.
The quilting went very well with no gumming up of the needle at all. Here’s where I would normally show you a picture of my project, but it’s a surprise, and I don’t want to spoil it.
The verdict? I’m a huge fan! Now that I’ve tried it (and can still breathe), I’m going to use these products in future projects.
Have you been avoiding spray-basting adhesives (like I’ve been doing)? I encourage you to give it a try on a small project. I think that once you try it, you’ll be a convert just like I am.
Thanks so much to Diane for the great question!
Happy Stitching!
