Quilting Patterns and all Kinds of Quilty Treasures

Announcing: The First Quiltblox Online Patriotic Quilt Show

By Deb Messina on May 29, 2026May 29, 2026

With the nation’s 250th birthday right around the corner, I’ve been thinking about all the patriotic quilts I’ve made over the years. Quilting is such a significant part of our nation’s history, and there’s something uniquely special about a patriotic quilt.

Maybe it’s the familiar combination of red, white, and blue fabrics. Maybe it’s the stars, stripes, eagles, barns, flags, fireworks, or Americana prints that remind us of summers gone by. Patriotic quilts often tell deeply personal stories about family, home, service, tradition, and the places we love most.

Let's Have a Patriotic Quilt Show! A stack of patriotic quilts on a porch

For generations, quilts have helped tell the American story. In the earliest days of our country, women pieced together scraps of precious fabric to keep their families warm, often gathering together for quilting bees that built both quilts and community. During times of war, quilts were made for fundraising efforts, comfort, remembrance, and support. Over the years, quilting evolved into both an art form and a form of storytelling, preserving memories, celebrating milestones, and reflecting the beauty of everyday American life.

Patriotic quilts became especially popular during important moments in our nation’s history, from Centennial celebrations in the 1800s to the Bicentennial quilting revival of the 1970s (that’s when I started quilting). Even today, we quilters continue to create beautiful red, white, and blue quilts that celebrate freedom, family traditions, military service, hometown pride, and protest, and the spirit of America itself.

I thought it would be fun to celebrate that tradition together by doing something I’ve never done before. What’s that? An online patriotic quilt show where we can all share our patriotic quilts with each other.

Welcome to the First Quiltblox Online Patriotic Quilt Show!

On the 4th of July, Quiltblox will host an online quilt show featuring patriotic quilts shared by readers, subscribers, and fellow quilters from across the country. And I would absolutely love for you to participate.

Whether your patriotic quilt is:

  • traditional
  • modern
  • scrappy
  • vintage-inspired
  • a wall hanging
  • table topper or table runner
  • bed quilt,
  • pillow
  • received as a gift or an award
  • or even a treasured family heirloom…

I’d love to see it and hear the story behind it.

Patriotic quilts often celebrate military service, and while others are inspired by hometown pride, historic places, summer memories, or a love of the red, white, and blue. Every quilt has a story.

Call for Entries: How to Participate

To participate in the Quiltblox Online Patriotic Quilt Show, simply send:

  • 1–3 photos of your quilt
  • The name of your quilt (if it has one)
  • A short description or story about the quilt

You can also tell us:

  • What inspired you to make this quilt? We love a good story and want to know the inspiration behind your patriotic quilt.
  • Email photos and stories to: deb@quiltblox.com
  • Submission deadline: June 26, 2026

By submitting your photos, you are giving Quiltblox permission to share them on the Quiltblox website, Facebook page, Instagram page, and related show posts.

Sharing a Few of My Own

To get things started, I’ll share a few of my own patriotic quilts over the next several weeks, including some quilts I made as a Quilt of Valor for family members who have served in the Navy, Marines, Army, and the National Guard.

Freedom’s Fireworks was made for my stepdad (US Marines – Korea). He was so surprised to be awarded this quilt at our annual family party.

Patriotic Quilt Awarded to Mack Bucknell - August 2016
Designed and pieced by me (Deb Messina). Charisma Horton did the long-arm quilting, and my friend and Quilt of Valor Coordinator Faith Holloway officiated the presentation of this quilt to my stepdad, Mack Bucknell.

I love making patriotic quilts so much that I’ve designed a couple of patterns you may have seen: Old Glory and Crown of Stars.

I’m excited to see the creativity, craftsmanship, and stories this community will share. One of my favorite things about quilting has always been the connection it creates between people. Even though this quilt show will happen online, my hope is that it will feel very much like walking through a quilt show together, admiring beautiful work, gathering inspiration, and celebrating the stories stitched into every quilt.

Pull out your pictures of those patriotic quilts, send them to me, and join us for the first Quiltblox Online Patriotic Quilt Show this Independence Day.

I can’t wait to see what you’ve created.

Happy Stitching,

Deb
