Welcome to the Quiltblox 12 Days of Christmas! Each day starting today and continuing until December 9th, I’ll share a word of the day that has meaning for me during this holiday season. Today’s word is Friends.

True Friends are those who really know you – but love you anyway. – Edna Buchanan
I chose this word because:
Friends come into my life (and yours) for a reason. We may not always understand what that reason might be. Some of them come into our lives because of the work we choose, the community groups we belong to, a shared interest, or where we happen to live. Sometimes they are in our lives for a short time, and then something changes, and they and we move on. Others come into our lives and become chosen family.
The word “Friends” begins in connection — those moments when laughter flows as easily as fabric through the machine. Friendship happens whenever two people share something they love. For quilters, friendship often starts with a bit of fabric swapped, a pattern admired, or a compliment on color choices.
Over time, those small moments weave into lifelong bonds — just like pieced blocks forming something beautiful when they come together.
The holidays remind us how much richer life is when it’s stitched together with friendship. Whether it’s your quilting circle, a long-distance sewing buddy, or someone who simply “gets” your love of fabric, friends add warmth and laughter to every season. Friendship—like a well-loved quilt—grows softer and more treasured with time and care.
I know that every single one of the friends who have been part of my life for a moment or a lifetime is part of who I am now. And for that, I am grateful.
Who are the “quilty friends” who make your days brighter? Maybe today’s the perfect day to send one a quick note or photo of the two of you and let them know the friendship you share is important.
Idea for connecting with a friend this holiday season:
Stitch up a pretty (small) quilt block and stitch it to a piece of cardstock or heavy paper that has been folded in half. Add a handwritten note inside and snail mail it to your friend. Don’t worry about the raw edges of your block – it’s an original work of art and adds to the charm of your card.
Gift Idea for Quilty Friends
I pulled together some fun quilty gifts for my small quilt group using these charming zipper bags and adding all the other goodies inside. Here are the bags and what I included inside:
