Welcome to the Quiltblox 12 Days of Christmas! Each day until December 9th, I’ll share a word of the day that has meaning for me during this holiday season. Today’s word is Learning.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss
I chose this word because:
There are so many things I want to know about. I’m very much a lifelong learner, and as a fellow quilter, I suspect that may be true for you, too. Learning something new about a subject I’m interested in gives me all kinds of creative energy. It sparks so many ideas. If only there were time enough to master all the things I’d love to learn about. We’ll talk about that on another day.
The genesis of “learning” is curiosity — that spark inside that says, I wonder what would happen if I tried… Every quilter knows this feeling. It’s what starts us on every new project and pushes us to grow. Learning begins with a willingness to be imperfect and a desire to keep going anyway.
Every quilter knows that learning never really ends. From trying a new block design to finally mastering curved seams, each lesson becomes part of our creative journey. The holidays are a perfect time to reflect on what we’ve learned this year—both in quilting and in life—and to look forward to what new skills we might pick up in the year to come.
Can you think of something quilting-related that you learned this year? All those things we learn and put into practice improve our skills, and allow us to take on more creative projects. It’s pretty exciting stuff!
Idea for learning something new this holiday season:
Choose one new technique you’ve thought about trying, and learn as much as you can about it. Read a book, take a class online or in real life, follow people on Facebook or Instagram who demonstrate that technique. And take a little time to play around with it. Learning something new – grows brain cells – and inspires creativity. Stay curious, my friend!
To help you think about new techniques to try, I’ve rounded up several options (there are so many more – but this is a great place to start):
